Bylaws

The purpose of the Hall of Fame shall be to honor, preserves, and perpetuate the names and outstanding accomplishments of athletes, coaches, or other sports personalities who have brought lasting fame to the Texas School for the Deaf through their exceptional athletic feats at high school level, and of alumni of the said school who have done successfully in their professional and/or technical endeavors after graduation of this school.

Requirement for Athletic Nominees

  • A candidate, player, or coach must have by his/her athletic or sports exploits brought fame and glory to the Texas School for the Deaf.
  • Male or Female participants in any recognized form of sports competition are eligible for selections.
  • All candidate players must have attended the Texas School for the Deaf for at least two academic years and participated in athletic activities for at least one year of interscholastic competition at high school level. They must be TSD graduates and hold a high school diploma.
  • All candidate coaches must have spent at least 5 years in sports competition or produced a championship team in less time during their coaching days at TSD, whichever shall come first.
  • All candidates must have been in retirement at least five (5) years from athletic activities at high school level.
  • All nominations must be submitted t the Executive Director prior to June 1 preceding their induction into the TSD Hall of Fame. The election of honorees shall be finalized and results submitted to the Board of Directors within thirty (30) d0ays thereafter.
  • All candidates must have never been convicted of a crime constituting a felony under the Laws of the State of Texas or the United States of America.
  • A list of those whose exploits qualify them for the TSD Hall of Fame will be submitted to the Board of Directors and from this list not more than fifteen (15) names will be submitted to the Selection Committee.
  • The Selection Committee (refer to the Hall of Fame Committee guidelines) will vote on the number of nominees and each voter will be allowed to select up to five (5) nominees per ballot. A nominee, in order to be elected, must receive the vote of 75%of the members of the Selection Committee voting in the election.
  • In the event that a sufficient number of electees do not receive the requisite 75% vote, a list of nominees equal to twice the number of the group yet to be selected will be returned to the Selection Committee for further balloting. If there is still an insufficient number who receive 75% of the ballot, a list of names returned shall include those nominees who received the greatest number votes on the previous ballot.

Requirement for Non-Athletic Nominees

  • A candidate, student, or staff must have, by his/her non-athletic achievements, brought fame and glory to the Texas School for the Deaf. A candidate may be eligible for election by the Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
  • All Candidates/students must have attended the Texas School for the Deaf for at least two academic years and graduated from this school with a high school diploma.
  • All candidates/staff must have spent/worked at least five years at the Texas School for the Deaf, however, they need not have gradated from the school.
  • A list of names five (5) nominees whose notable achievements qualify them for the TSD Hall of Fame membership will be submitted to the Board of Directors by the Executive Director for election.
  • All candidates/students must have been in retirement/out of high school for at least five years.
  • All nomination must be submitted to the Executive Director prior to election preceding their induction into the TSD Hall of Fame.
  • All candidates must never have been convicted of a crime constituting a felony under the laws of the State of Texas or in the United States of America.
  • The Hall of Fame Board will vote on the number of nominees and each voter will be allowed to select one (1) nominee per ballot. A nominee, in order to be selected, must receive the vote of 75% of the members of the Board present voting in the election.

Hall of Fame Committee

  • a Chairperson appointed by the TSDAA President and
  • b) three (3) persons selected by chairperson and any Hall of Fame Inductees.
  • The Executive Director appoints one person to represent TSD to be on the committee.

All selected committee members shall be approved by the TSDAA board of Directors. They may be replaced at the discretion of the Hall of Fame Committee Chairperson with approval of the TSDAA Board of Directors. When a committee member resigns, replacement shall be appointed by the Chairperson with the approval of the TSDAA Board of Directors.

The duties of the Hall of Fame Committee shall be to oversee the (1) Hall of Fame, (2) screen and prepare all nominations, (3) handle all ballots and (4) announce the inductees. The Committee may select a chairperson to plan the Hall of Fame banquet; arrange for reservation of the banquet room, menu, and guest speaker in cooperation with the TSDAA President. The Committee shall be responsible for keeping an orderly file on all nominations and supporting material, for seeing that photographs and resumes are permanently kept in the TSD Archives and for passing all materials on to their successors.

The electors shall be the four (4) selected members of the Hall of Fame Committee and any Hall of Fame Inductees. They shall serve for a period of two (2) years—September 1—August 31. The names and addresses of all electors shall be published in the fall TSDAA newsletter.

Committee discussion pertaining to the merit of any selections shall be confined to closed sessions. Voting on selection shall also be confined to closed sessions.

Ballots shall be counted and results tabulated shall be handled by the Hall of Fame Chairperson for verification. The chairperson shall send copies of the ballots if any Hall of Fame committee member requests it. They must respond to the Chairperson regarding the verification of tabulations within then (10) business days. The Chairperson then may announce the results of the election. After a period of six (6) months, the chairperson shall destroy all ballots received. If the nominees do not get 75% of the votes, they will be referred to the file for future consideration.

Members of the Hall of Fame committee shall be graduates of Texas School for the Deaf and members in good standing of the Texas School for the Deaf Alumni Association.

Nominations

  • Candidates for the TSD Hall of Fame may be named by interested individuals. It shall be the responsibility of the nominator to supply all supporting materials. The nominator’s name shall be confidential.
  • All nominations must be submitted to the Hall of Fame Chairperson prior to Nov. 1 preceding their induction into the TSD Hall of Fame. The election of honorees shall be finalized and submitted to the TSDAA Board of Directors before Jan. 1. The inductees shall be informed as soon as possible by the Hall of Fame Chairperson.
